Upon arrival, we were immediately enchanted by the picturesque setting, surrounded by lush gardens, olive groves, and vineyards. The villa’s historic charm blended seamlessly with modern luxury, offering a tranquil retreat that felt like a piece of paradise. We couldn’t wait to explore every corner of this exquisite property and savour its experiences.
Join us as we recount our unforgettable stay in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, where luxury and relaxation intertwine. And let us not forget our Michelin-star wine and dining adventure—a delightful journey through Tuscan traditions and aromas.

Getting There

Relais and Chateaux Il Falconiere and Spa is a beautiful 17th-century villa 10 minutes from Cortona Town Central, Italy, that offers a luxurious experience focusing on wine and wellness.
Cortona is a picturesque hilltop town straddling Tuscany and Umbria, Italy. It lies approximately 115 kilometres southeast of Florence, making it about a 1.5-hour drive or a 2-hour train journey from the Tuscan capital. Nestled between the Val di Chiana Valley and the eastern Tuscan hills, Cortona offers access to both major cities while providing a tranquil retreat amidst rolling hills, olive groves, and vineyards. It’s perfectly situated for those exploring Tuscany’s rich history and culture.
The villa’s prime location makes it an ideal base for exploring Tuscany and Umbria‘s picturesque towns and key sights. Within a short drive, you can discover the enchanting hilltop town of Montepulciano, the Renaissance gem of Pienza, and the stunning landscapes of Val d’Orcia, all just 30 km away. Further afield, at around 60 km, you can visit Montalcino, known for its exquisite Brunello wine, and the historical Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore. The spiritual and artistic treasures of Assisi, the charming town of Spello, and the medieval beauty of Siena are also within a 60 km radius. For those willing to venture a bit further, the iconic towers of San Gimignano are approximately 80 km away.
Each destination offers unique experiences, making your stay at Il Falconiere a gateway to the heart of Tuscany and Umbria.

Booking, Arrivals, and Departures: Our Italian Weekend Escape

Booking Our Stay
Eight months before our trip to Italy, we decided to secure our stay directly with the villa, Relais and Chateaux Il Falconiere and Spa. John and I couldn’t bear missing out on the chance to savour a Michelin-star dining experience and indulge in luxury during the final weekend of our unforgettable five-week holiday in Sardinia, Sicily, mainland Italy and Malta.
Moreover, it was a leap of faith, but it paid off! Our weekend package was nothing short of a dream. It included a two-night stay in a plush deluxe suite, breakfast each morning, access to pristine swimming pools adorned with sun beds and fluffy towels, entry to the revitalising Thesan Spa, seamless WiFi, and convenient parking—all the comforts we craved.

Elevating Our Experience with Food and Wine

To elevate our experience, we also opted for their food and wine package at their onsite famous Michelin-starred Il Falconiere Ristorante. Here, we were promised a gastronomic Tuscan adventure unlike any other. Furthermore, the prospect of sipping exquisite wines while savouring meticulously crafted dishes prepared by renowned Chef Silvia Baracchi thrilled our senses. Specifically, my husband John, a wine lover, was particularly drawn to their wine tours and tastings, which shed light on the fascinating Baracchi wine cultivation process. However, our hearts sank a little when we learned that the holiday long weekend in Italy meant we couldn’t partake in the tours, as they are only offered on weekdays. Nevertheless, I was intrigued by the unique opportunity for a wine-infused bath at the luxurious Thesan Spa—now that’s a soaking to remember!
Exploring and Unwinding

John and I enjoyed a wonderful night in Siena, exploring the attractions of this magnificent hilltop town. The following morning, we set off again, making a quick detour to Arezzo before continuing to Cortona for more sightseeing adventures. After filling our hearts with their historical charms, we drove just 10 minutes from Cortona Town Central through the stunning Tuscan countryside to reach Il Falconiere. Pulling into the villa’s undercover parking, we couldn’t help but marvel at the lush surroundings. The check-in process at the concierge desk was delightfully smooth; we left our hefty suitcases behind, trusting the staff to deliver them to our suite later. Our bags had to be delivered by van uphill, that’s how expansive the grounds are at Il Falconiere!
A personal tour of the property—a quick recon of the restaurant, bar, and grounds led by our enthusiastic Italian concierge, followed by strolling through beautifully manicured lawns, fragrant rose gardens, and sprawling vineyards felt like a scene from the “Under the Tuscan Sun” movie. Every corner was a feast for the senses, and my excitement heightened with each step as we approached the stairs leading up to our exquisitely furnished guestroom suite.

Farewell to Tuscany and Italy
We now fast-forward to our final day in Italy and our midday flight from Rome back to Australia. Both had arrived too soon! However, in true Italian fashion, we had to start our journey at dawn—before even the roosters welcomed the new day. The thought of missing out on the luxurious breakfast was bittersweet. Our concierge, ever accommodating, quickly assuaged my worries. They prepared a delightful takeaway breakfast for our 2.5-hour drive from Cortona to Rome’s Fiumicino Airport.
At 5:00 AM, with our guestroom keys exchanged for a bag filled with delicious treats, we bid farewell to the enchanting villa. Bleary-eyed but grinning, John and I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the above-and-beyond service we received throughout our stay. As we departed, we were met with a cheerful “Ciao!” from the overnight security, reminding us of the warmth that enveloped our every moment there.
Our Italian getaway had been an epic culmination of indulgence and adventure, leaving us with memories we would cherish forever.

Our Room at Il Falconiere

Stepping into a Fairytale
Stepping into Relais & Châteaux Il Falconiere and Spa felt like entering a fairytale! With 22 exquisitely furnished guestrooms, each room is a treasure, showcasing the elegance of Tuscan classic style. Picture this: our deluxe guestroom suite was nestled in the antique villa, adorned with vibrant Tuscan colours and charming décor that radiated a warm, inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a cosy home away from home. I sank into the luxurious king-sized bed, and my worries instantly faded. After a long day sightseeing in Arezzo and Cortona, the well-appointed bathroom en suite and shower felt like a refreshing embrace. Additionally, we loved having a minibar stocked with delightful treats. Most importantly, coffee-making facilities were conveniently at our fingertips.

Tuscan Colours and Private Oasis

The decor of our rooms, featuring Tuscan pastel blue and yellow, evoked a serene and sun-drenched landscape. The pastel blue king-sized bedspread reflected the soft hues of the Mediterranean sky and the cool tones of distant hills. Both colours created a calming and tranquil ambience. In colour contrast, the yellow-painted walls of the guestroom captured the warmth of Tuscan sunlight. They were reminiscent of golden wheat fields and the cheerful facades of rustic homes. These colours created an idyllic countryside charm and a sense of timeless elegance.

But that was not all! Each morning, we stepped into our little oasis—a comfy lounge area for two, looking outside onto blooming rose gardens. I savoured coffee in the early morning and reading time in this space. It was pure bliss!

Spa and Pool Amenities

Unwinding at the Thesan Spa
The luxurious Thesan Spa is where John’s journey into relaxation began. First, he indulged in a tailor-made massage that worked miracles on his shoulders. Then, with each soothing stroke, the tension melted away, gradually easing the kinks and stress accumulated over the last five weeks of driving in Italy. How could we resist the allure of the traditional Hammam steam room? It was the ultimate escape, allowing us to detoxify and unwind. The dry heat sauna was my secret weapon against stress—talk about the perfect trio: relax, rejuvenate, and refocus!
Poolside Bliss

As I lounged poolside, I felt as though time stood still. With two stunning swimming pools—one indoor and one outdoor—my leisure options seemed endless. Moreover, I loved taking refreshing dips while gazing at the breathtaking views of the vineyards. Meanwhile, the picturesque hilltop town of Cortona stood nestled against the stunning backdrop of the Val di Chiana Valley, adding to the serene beauty of the scene.

Afternoon Zen Mode
In the afternoons before happy hour, I fully embraced my zen mode. As I unwound, I daydreamed about indulging in a unique wine treatment at the spa. Meanwhile, the soothing scents of essential oils surrounded me, heightening the sense of relaxation. All the while, I imagined gazing out at the stunning Tuscan landscape, letting its beauty wash over me. Sigh … just thinking about it instantly takes me back to those blissful moments!

Cocktail Hour & Snacks

The Perfect Setting
As the sun slowly descended over the Tuscan hills, we gravitated toward Il Falconiere’s La Dolce Vita lounge bar at the villa. After exploring Cortona’s historic charm, the tranquil ambience of the bar and the Limonaia lounge areas was the perfect setting for unwinding.

Crafted Cocktails at Apertivi Time
With scenic views stretching out over the rolling landscape, we indulged in a delightful array of cocktails perfectly crafted by the attentive bar staff. Picture this: Signature cocktails like the Falcon Mule, made with vodka, basil, honey, and ginger beer. Or a Mexican Bellini with Tequila, peach puree, wine, and prosecco. Heaven! Oh, and let us not forget John’s standard contemporary go-to, an Italian Negroni—a classic blend of Gin, Campari, and red Vermouth.

A gentle breeze carried the golden hues of the Tuscan sunset as we savoured each sip. It was a moment of pure bliss. Laughter echoed through the air, mingling with the clinking of glasses as fellow guest travellers gathered. They shared stories, reminiscing about the day’s adventures and celebrating their journey.
Delectable Bite-sized Dishes
On our last afternoon, we decided to have lunch at the bar. The villa’s snack menu featured an array of traditional dishes, each more delectable than the other. Think pizza, pasta, Italian cheeses, cold cuts, plus tiramisu or panna cotta for dolce! From savoury bruschetta topped with fresh tomatoes and basil to delicate slices of prosciutto accompanied by ripe melon, every bite was a testament to the region’s rich culinary heritage.

A gentle breeze carried the golden hues of the Tuscan sunset as we savoured each sip. As we enjoyed our light meal, the sun cast long shadows across the terrace, adding a touch of magic to the experience. The beauty of Tuscany, combined with the warm hospitality of the Il Falconiere sommeliers, made each happy hour a cherished memory. Whether it was the refreshing cocktails or the sumptuous snacks, our time at the bar was one of the many highlights of our stay. It offered a perfect blend of relaxation and indulgence.

Other Activities

To amp up the excitement, we discovered a treasure trove of luxurious wine and wellness activities coordinated by the attentive concierge. Given more time, we would have taken advantage of the following:
Exciting Vineyard Adventures

Although we couldn’t visit the Baracchi Winery due to their weekday-only tours, we tasted their exceptional array of vintage wines on our first night at dinner. Established in 1860, the winery has crafted remarkable wines for five generations. During our stay, an experienced sommelier served us at our table, guiding us through a delightful tasting journey. Each sip was a testament to the land’s rich heritage, with the sommelier’s expertise enhancing the experience. The wines enjoyed amidst the stunning vistas of the valley told the story of the vineyard with every glass.

An Enchanting Journey
This getaway was not just a holiday. It was an enchanting journey filled with relaxation, adventure, and unforgettable memories amidst the Tuscan charm. We cannot wait to return with our Australian family and friends, as they are sick of us bragging about this place!

The Property Grounds

In the serene hush of early morning, the other resort guests slept soundly, still wrapped in their dreams. Meanwhile, I slipped out of my guestroom, my heart racing with the thrill of discovery. The extensive grounds beckoned me like an untold story just waiting to unfold. As I wandered through the manicured gardens with my phone camera in hand, the air was heavy with the intoxicating scents of blooming roses, centuries-old olive trees, and lush vineyards that sprawled as far as the eye could see.

Hidden Artwork Treasures

With every step, I was enveloped in a sense of wonder. The winding paths and tranquil trails seemed like secret passages. They led me through archways draped in climbing pink roses, their fragrant petals brushing against my skin. Here, I uncovered hidden treasures: whimsical sculptures such as the head of a Trojan horse and a magnificent falcon with outstretched wings. Each captured the spirit of the villa’s intriguing name and history.

I savoured these solitary strolls, immersing myself in the vibrant colours and aromatic whispers of Mediterranean herbs and flowers that danced in the gentle breeze.

The Hen House

As I rounded a corner, laughter escaped my lips at the sight of the EggCelsior Hotel, a charming chicken house that added a touch of whimsy to the landscape. Just the night before, I’d spotted the plucky hens wandering freely outside the main building, pecking at the meadow and living their best lives. I could hardly contain my anticipation at the thought of enjoying a fluffy omelette for breakfast, bursting with the flavour of eggs harvested just a few steps away from my table.

The Chapel
But the surprises didn’t end there. Tucked away among the lush shrubbery, I uncovered a stunning chapel—a beautiful Baroque-style sanctuary, lovingly consecrated since 1650. I approached the chapel, and the majestic structure exuded a sense of peace and history. I envisioned it as the perfect setting for intimate prayers or romantic weddings. Its serene atmosphere invited couples to exchange vows beneath the gaze of vibrant frescoes and timeworn furniture. Stepping inside, I was greeted by an inviting warmth that felt sacred and celebratory. It was perfect for quiet reflection or joyous moments.
The Tower

One of the most enchanting features was the Tower, a romantic hideaway perched above the gardens. I climbed the small spiral staircase. Each step heightened my anticipation. When I reached the top, the view took my breath away. Vistas of the vast property stretched out in every direction, a patchwork of vibrant colours and textures. It felt like stepping into a fairytale. The perfect backdrop for a cosy, intimate retreat or a stolen moment away from the world.
These grounds weren’t just a place to visit. They were a captivating tapestry, weaving together beauty, history, and a little slice of magic. I knew that each morning promised another adventure, another chance to explore, breathe, and be immersed in this enchanting haven.

A Culinary Dream: Fine Dining at Il Falconiere Ristorante

Dining Delights
The villa boasts a Michelin-starred restaurant aptly named Il Falconiere. It is here that our taste buds were tantalised each morning at breakfast, and where we dined on our first night. The restaurant offers exquisite Tuscan cuisine, thoughtfully paired with wines from their renowned Baracchi winery. Guests can enjoy these culinary delights from Il Falconiere’s elegant terrace, taking in the stunning panoramic views. The experience combines gourmet dining with the natural beauty of Tuscany, making it a truly unforgettable destination.

The moment I stepped into the restaurant at Il Falconiere, nestled within the enchanting walls of the former conservatory of Villa Baracchi, I felt as if I had been transported first-class to a fairy tale. This 17th-century villa exudes charm and history. Stunning wall-to-ceiling glass and sparkling chandeliers elegantly adorned the restaurant’s interior. Creating a beautifully bright and inviting atmosphere that seemed to welcome every guest with open arms.

One of the highlights of our stay was undoubtedly the panoramic terrace, where I spent each morning sipping a cappuccino and savouring my omelette breakfast against the backdrop of Cortona’s breathtaking landscape. Dining under the stars, surrounded by twinkling lights and the gentle sounds of nature, was nothing short of enchanting. For 3.5 hours, we were treated to an endless cascade of tasty morsels, each more delicious than the last. We embarked on a culinary adventure with the “A Journey in Tuscany” wine pairing and tasting menu. This delectable experience took us through a symphony of flavours. It started with rich chicken liver pate and succulent ox tongue. Then came crusted and smoked lamb that melted in our mouths. To finish, we indulged in a delicate Millefeuille with Chantilly and other dolce surprises. Each of our ten dishes, paired with exquisite Baracchi wines, captured the essence of Tuscan cuisine. It created an unforgettable gourmet journey through the region’s aromas and tastes.

Impeccable Wine Pairings
John and I were blown away by the impeccable wine pairings, from the refreshing Brut Rosé Metodo Classico that danced on my palate to the rich Smeriglio Sangiovese that told the story of the sun-soaked grapes it was made from. And let’s not forget the Il Mio Vinsanto DOC Cortona, a divine, sweet, velvety finish. Our experienced sommelier freely poured wines at our table, guiding us through a delightful wine-tasting journey throughout each food course. Each sip was a testament to the land’s rich heritage, with the sommelier’s expertise enhancing the experience. The wines enjoyed told the story of the Baracchi vineyard with every glass, amidst the stunning vistas of the valley.

The chef personally visited our table twice: first to introduce herself and later to check in on our culinary experience midway through our meal. This level of customer service is truly exceptional, deserving of their Michelin Star!
Discovering the Baracchi Winery

The magic didn’t stop there. We learned that the adjacent Baracchi winery, only a short stroll away, offers informative tours through the vineyards and cellars. They showcase the intricate winemaking process practised here for five generations since 1860! I could hardly contain my excitement at seeing the whole operation.
