Driving Tips:
- Borders: When crossing the border between Croatia and Slovenia, or entering Bosnia-Herzegovina or Montenegro, have your passport and the rental car’s “green card” (proof of insurance) ready. Expect border crossing delays during peak times.
- Toll Stickers: Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, and Hungary require cars on its expressways to display a toll sticker (vignette). If your car doesn’t have one, buy one at some border crossings, petrol stations when you cross the border, or from the car-rental agency. You don’t need one if you’ll be dipping into the country on minor roads—only for major highways.
- Environmental Sticker: To drive into environmental zones (Umweltzone) in many German city centres, including Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin, you need an Umweltplakette sticker. Most German rental cars come with one, but if renting outside Germany, ensure you get one for around €10 at borders or petrol stations, bringing your rental car’s registration and legal paperwork.
