Photography Gear

From camera and drone equipment to lenses and accessories to post-production photography and video editing software, here are our go-to travel photography gear.

At Suitcase Escapes, John and I love to travel. And when we are not travelling, we dream about our next trip. Part of our planning is thinking about the best camera kit we can take that won’t weigh us down but provides the best visual outcome.

One of the most common questions we get asked is what camera gear we use for the photography and video on our Suitcase Escapes blog site and social media platforms.

We are the classic example where you don’t need the most expensive gear or lenses to take good photos and video footage. You can find champagne-quality camera gear on a beer budget and not spend a fortune to obtain good image quality, especially if you are starting in travel photography.

So long as you understand the basic principles of composition and how to take your camera off auto, your images will speak for themselves.

We use all the camera gear on this page for all our photography and video content, and we can put our hands on our hearts and give our thumbs-up recommendations.

Our travel kit built up over the past decade or more of travelling the world, every item of camera gear on this page was purchased, tried, tested, and we highly recommend it. If you have any questions, contact us.

Photo & Video Editing

Best Photo & Video Editing
Software & Hardware

Post-Processing, Production & Printing

Not a day goes by when I am not using my Adobe Creative Cloud suite of software programs including Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop and Premiere Pro, to manage and edit all our photography and videos.

We highly recommend anyone looking to get serious about travel photography to subscribe and start learning Adobe Lightroom as soon as they get their first camera. It is a great entry level for beginners.

Taking photo shots is but one piece of the photography puzzle. Archiving and editing your images is an aspect of photography, and Lightroom is simply the best in class for these reasons.

Learning to use Adobe Lightroom will dramatically improve your photography and speed of editing and managing your photographic portfolio.

Buying an Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Premier Pro subscriptions is one of the best investments towards taking your photography and videography to the next level!

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is a photo editing, raster graphic design and digital art software.

I’ve used Adobe Photoshop for over two decades in my professional marketing career and as a hobbyist travel photographer.

I love using Adobe Photoshop particularly for my travel photography landscapes, cityscapes, streetscapes and people I meet on our travels to make them pop.

Some easy Photoshop techniques, as simple as 1-2-3, are cropping your photo to create emphasis, adjusting brightness and contrast and removing unwanted objects from photos.

There are multiple Adobe Photoshop plans to select from, including access to the latest Photoshop features and updates, Photoshop on the iPad, cloud storage, and more.

Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Classic

Adobe Lightroom is one of the best tools to manage and process our travel photos.

Lightroom for mobile is a free photo editing app for iPhone, iPad and Android devices. It is a simple solution for capturing, editing and sharing photos.

Presets are a god-send and time-saver. With one tap on any of the 150+ hand-crafted free and premium presets to choose from, your images go from ordinary to extraordinary.

Removing unwanted background distractions or blemishes is also easy with the Healing Brush tool.

By upgrading and subscribing to Adobe Lightroom premium, you will enjoy additional features and control over all your devices (i.e., mobile, desktop and web), with all images automatically stored and synced in the cloud. There is security in the knowledge your holiday snaps won’t get lost if your camera goes missing.

Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe Premiere Pro is a professional-level video editing software for Windows and Mac. Its flexibile editing interface, state-of-the-art tools and powerful capabilities, makes it an absolute winner, in every sense.

It’s incredibly feature packed, integrates with the powerful Adobe suite, and has some amazing features that eases organising and editing.

We use it daily for all our YouTube video projects. The cross-platform program needs some serious hardware to support it and keep it running at peak performance.

Premiere Pro is available by subscription only, or part of the complete suite of Adobe Creative Cloud.

Adobe Creative Cloud

Adobe Creative Cloud (CC). is a suite of professional applications that includes Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and the rest.

As a solid suite of programs for my entire career as web and graphics designer, I find the Adobe CC excellent for creating graphics, videos, animation, web design and anything I need to keep this blog looking smick.

The creative suite is a powerhouse in features and workflow between software programs. Its entire suite of products has everything you need to run a cutting edge online business from design through to publication, to real-time video editing on the fly, to creating & protecting pdf documents with complete Adobe PDF management.

However, this software is complicated for beginners plus needs serious hardware to ensure it runs at optimal speed and performance.

Dell XPS 13.4" FHD Touchscreen Intel Evo Platform Laptop

As content creators for Suitcase Escapes, we are constantly on our laptops. More so on our travels — on road trips, planes, trains and staying at beautiful places. We love capturing and editing our moments on the go.

All this wouldn't be possible without our Intel Evo-based platform Dell XPS 13 touchscreen laptop (now replaced by Dell's Inspiron).

We try to pack smart and pack light. This laptop is thin and light, fitting into my carry-on luggage backpack without weighing me down

. Gone are the days we carry zillions of cables in our suitcases, with the laptop's one-cable clutter-free solution. And, with its charging port, I can easily plug in my cameras and hard drives efficiently.

Another great feature is its in-built Intel Wi-Fi 6. It is speedy and enables us to stream high-quality 4K movies and TV shows without a drop in quality.

We can switch from Entertainment mode to Creator mode thanks to the inbuilt Intel 12th Gen Intel Core processor, saving us time and increasing our ability to multitask. It is fast charging — 30 minutes will give you 4 hours of battery life and lasting high-powered performance.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio

Our Microsoft Surface Book 2 (15-inch) (now replaced by the latest Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio) is a light-weight tablet-laptop hybrid, powerful processor with a fairly punchy GPU that appeals to us creative types. It is great for photographic and video production, as well as its speed and efficient workflow.

It comes with a surface keyboard, mouse*, pen* and touchscreen, and can function also as a tablet. It also includes a 1080p webcam and rear camera we using regularly for our live Instagram feeds and online business meetings.

We find it to be a powerful and versatile laptop with good battery life and fast charging, which really important when you are travelling & not able to recharge on the fly, as you would at home.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio has a base unit price with Intel Core i5, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD and Intel Iris X graphics, but you have the option to upgrade to a substantially more powerful and pricier version with the optional Surface Slim Pen 2.

Canon imagePROGRAF
PRO-300 Printer

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is the best photo printer I've ever owned. It produces outstanding, high-quality photos with very clear details and accurate colours.

I've used local print shops without the colour quality output I expected. The PRO-300 impressive colour gamut means it can accurately reproduce a wide range of shades and gradients without banding. Also, it can perform tabloid-sized printing, and its cost-per-print for monochrome or black-only prints is outstanding, saving me money. Replacement ink is relatively inexpensive too.

As a high-end professional inkjet photo and fine art printer, it comes with built-in maintenance features, like print head cleaning. You can connect to a single PC, Canon camera or video recorder, to Wi-Fi and via mobile apps printing from your smartphone or tablet.

My holiday hall-of-travels, is full of framed photo prints.

On the downside, its print speed is very slow, and it takes over two minutes for a photo to come out. However, the results are worth the time and expense.

Photobook Australia

The first photo coffee table book I curated and designed was a collection of stories and photos of our six-week road trip around Italy (an excerpt featured on our About Us page). It gave me the travel inspiration to create this blog.

Photobook Australia has several best-selling photobooks with creative designs for any occasion, including templates to capture your travel memories.

It is a great way to tell the story of your favourite trip, every adventure you’ve embarked on, every journey you’ve taken, and the serendipitous travel moments captured in photographs.

From orientation and size to cover types to binding to the number of pages (minimum of 20 to maximum 300 pages) — you can make a unique photo book you can treasure for years to come.

Beyond photobooks, you can also produce wall and home decor, stationery and cards, calendars and other prints.

Our Cameras

Best Cameras for Travel

I received my first serious digital camera for my 40th birthday and confess to being a self-taught photographer. At the time Canon offered this camera as part of an inexpensive travel bundle kit with a number of standard entry-level lenses. Since then I’ve trialled and purchased additional compatible camera lenses and tend to favour one or two over the others. I won’t always use technical terms to describe my camera gear.

I use my camera as a license to be curious and my creative soul within. I’ve a passionate desire to tell visual stories and share my travel experiences through beautiful photos. Checkout out our Photography section on this site for inspirational travel photos, photography tips and guides.

Mobile Phone: Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

My Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is a phone with features tailor-made for someone who loves photography and videography, like me. It is the camera I take everywhere when I don't want to lug a heavy camera and look like a tourist.

Its inbuilt camera lets me snapshot moments my way. I can frame up the whole landscape scene with a Wide-angle Camera, capture more of the world with Ultra Wide Camera, or get up close and personal with Telephoto Camera.

Its Space Zoom features allow me to zoom past clutter to focus on what matters.

When it's dark, and I have night mode ON, the Galaxy S23 Ultra rear camera uses advanced AI to pull in more light so I can shoot more detail and colourful pics.

With its Single Take option, with one tap of the shutter, the camera will take multiple shots in 15 seconds, providing you with videos, photos and more to select the best.

Let us not forget its front camera, where you can take selfies and vlogs at a new level of professionalism.

View Samsung's other product range at its Amazon store.

Camera Body: Canon EOS R10 Mirrorless Camera

The Canon EOS 700D DSLR Camera is the main camera I travel with - the predecessor to the newer Canon EOS R10 Mirrorless Camera.

However, despite its age it is still a great digital and vlogging DSLR camera for a beginner and was the gateway for starting my travel photography journey.

All photos throughout this Suitcase Escapes blog have been taken with the Canon E0S 700D and the interchangeable lenses listed further below.

With built-in stabilization and the LCD screen viewfinder with live view performance, this camera is a dream for videographers!

However, we now favour our full-frame Mirrorless Camera to primarily take video footage for our YouTube Channel.

Check out Canon's full range of cameras, printers and the like at their Amazon store.

Camera Body: Canon EOS R3 Mirrorless Camera

Our Canon EOS M50 is a lightweight portable size camera we primarily use for taking video footage and photos.

My current camera has now been replaced by the Canon EOS R3, a Pro Mirrorless class camera and Canon EOS M50 Mark II, an Entry-Level Mirrorless class camera.

It is an excellent entry-level camera for beginner aspiring travel photographers and videographers.

Sporting 4K video and 24 frames per second capabilities it produces 24-megapixel vibrant high-resolution images and videos. The camera's Wifi function allows us to connect to the Canon Camera Connect app. From there we can transfer our images quickly and easily to our smart phone and then directly share those photos onto our social media platforms.

As a bonus, this mirrorless camera also comes complete with a EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM zoom lens as part of the M50 kit. To save us money from not having to purchase other mirrorless lenses, we bought a Canon Mount Adapter providing the flexibility to use all our DSLR camera lenses on the M50 camera body.

Check out Canon's full range of cameras, printers and the like at their Amazon store.

GoPro: HERO8 Black

We love taking our GoPro Hero8 Black on road trips, to the beach, and when we go sightseeing.

Its small compact size draws less attention to us or the subjects when we are shooting, compared with a camera. The smooth quality of its video footage and high-fidelity audio both above and below the water [its completely waterproof down to 33ft (10m)], is second to none.

Since we purchased the GoPro Hero8 Black we’ve added further accessories to enhance its capabilities: a shotgun-mic (Media Mod), a flip-up screen for framing yourself in video shots (Display Mod), and LED lighting to illuminate our subject (Light Mod).

Our Insta360 One X2 is a great way to capture photos and video footage with a creative flair.

Its photo mode opens up all new possibilities for a creative photographer. One cool feature of the Insta360 camera is choosing the focal length after you take the picture. Either take a standard photo shot or zoom out for this fantastic fish-eye effect.

To obtain the highest quality image with the Insta360, I always shoot in RAW. For beginners you can edit the RAW image on their included Insta360 app (via your phone or tablet) using their auto pure shot mode or via Adobe Lightroom. Alternatively, with more advanced skills via Adobe Photoshop.

Read more on the Insta360’s video capabilities under our Our Drones section.

You can really get creative when best paired with Insta360’s simple invisible selfie stick (see the Camera Accessories section for more details), giving the impression of flying and a floating camera look.

Visit the Insta360 store on Amazon for their full range of products.

Our Camera Lenses

Best Lenses for Travel Photography

The best camera lenses for travel will let you shoot almost anything, save some space in your bag and not weigh you down!

For a lot of travel photographers this means consolidating your camera lenses down to a single lens, and for all round versatility, a “superzoom” lens that does the job of a standard zoom lens and a telephoto zoom combined.

Here are the camera lenses we have in our travel kit.

Lens: Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-f5.6 IS II (Discontinued)

When to use: Working with moderate to far distance subjects.

It is the predecessor to the newer Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens—an inexpensive, light, entry level telephoto zoom lens that has image stabilisation, very good image quality and a very useful focal length range that will nicely complement most general purpose zoom lenses.

I use this lens for taking natural portrait shots (with a nice bokeh background), landscapes, close sports events/action and wildlife (especially when panning), close-ups and street and food travel photography. Its sweet spot is around 135mm at f/8.

Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 III

When to use: Every day This 18-55mm lens is the most versatile and compact lens in my travel photography kit.

I use the Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens quite frequently as its an excellent general purpose all rounder and is not bad for video footage. Treat this inexpensive lens like it has two lenses in one.

The 18mm is a moderate wide-angle len that is great for landscapes and architecture (including converging lines or verticals of buildings and statues, for example.).

Whereas the 55mm focal length is ideal for taking candid portraits and city night shots, for street photography and closing in on detail. Its sweet spot is around 35mm at f/5.6 and sharp at 18mm f/3.5.

Lens: Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro SXII

When to use: Indoors and outdoors.

It is the predecessor to the newer Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Canon Mount.

This one of my most favourite wide-angle zoom lens that has never failed me when it comes to landscape photography.

Its fantastic for dramatic sunset photos and seascape scenes, waterfall photos with long exposure, night sky photography (including shots of stars or star-trails) and group people shots.

I have taken great indoor architectural shots of Italian church frescoes with this lens as its excellent for enclosed spaces, such as small rooms, inside cars and interiors. Its sweet spot is at f/8.

Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM (Prime)

When to use: Every day walk around lens on a day out. Having gear that is small, light and versatile enables you to blend in with the crowds and not standout when travelling.

The Canon EF 50mm prime lens, also nicknamed the 'nifty fifty' takes excellent natural looking images with pleasing bokeh.

Its particularly great for portrait shots (for example, for less tightly-framed head and shoulders, partial body and fully body portraits), landscapes, candid, food/street and architecture photography when you want to close in on details, still life, panorama shots and indoors where there is low light and no tripod or flash allowed.

Lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telephoto Zoom

When to use: If you are partial to getting out in nature and have a passion for landscape photography, then this is the lens I use.

This is the newest additional to my camera lens arsenal and is the less expensive version than that of the f/2.8.

As a passionate landscape photographer I want to extend my reach beyond my wide-angle lens. Particularly, when I want to focus on small details within my composition or landscape.

The Canon 70-200mm telephone zoom lens also comes in handy for photographing wildlife, candid portraits, or anything that I can't get close to.

Check out the large range of 70-200mm camera lenses for all camera brands on Amazon.

Lens: Canon Mount Adapter Lens EF to EOS-M

When to use: A lens adapter helps bridge the divide between mismatched brands and mount types of lenses and camera bodies.

To have the flexibility of using our DSLR lenses on our a Mirrorless Camera, a mount adaptor was the best economical option.

This Canon Mount Adapter Lens offers the flexibility to shoot with the entire EF and EF-S range of lenses when using the EOS M body.

AF is possible when using the Mount Adapter. Whether it’s macro, wide-angle, standard, telephoto or super telephoto lenses, our creativity became limitless (and cost effective) with this mount adapter.

Travel photographers on a budget or those looking for inexpensive ways to level up their images and experiment with their style could benefit from trying out a lens adapter.

Our Camera Tripods

Best Camera Tripods For Travel

Our best travel tripods are small when folded packing into a backpack or bag or hook them onto one.

The ideal tripod should be lightweight enough, best made with carbon fibre, to carry them around all day, whether we are exploring city streets or hiking over mountains. More so, they need to perform as expected — from being sturdy for shake-free and blur-free photos to being easy to set up to versatile, adjustable, and strong enough to handle the weight of our camera and heaviest lens in our kit.

Here are our all-time favourite travel tripods I can’t live without.

HOHEM: AI TRACKING SMARTPHONE GIMBAL

While I’m the main photographer on our holidays, John has been my co-pilot, capturing video footage and photos of me, always following my strict instructions! Check out this awesome gimbal we discovered—the Hohem iSteady V3 AI Tracking Smartphone Gimbal, a recent addition to our travel photography gear kit.

It's compact and lightweight, perfect for mobile videographers and vloggers like us. The advanced AI tracking tech means it can follow your movements automatically, which is great for capturing those dynamic travel shots. Plus, it has a built-in extension rod and tripod, so you can get versatile shooting angles and stable footage, even when you're on the move.

It's compatible with iOS and Android devices, and the Hohem Joy app adds some cool features like wide-angle selfie panoramas. This gimbal ensures smooth, professional-quality videos and photos wherever you go—an ideal travel photography gift.

Tripod: Manfrotto Befree

I've used this Manfrotto Befree Tripod for years.  It is very lightweight, has a ball head, a quick lock and release camera plate and can be set up at varying heights extremely quickly.

It's easy to carry either strapped onto my camera bag or carried using the shoulder bag included.

This is one piece of durable camera gear that easily fits into my suitcase and isn't carried on the plane with me.

Refer to other travel photography gear under the excellent Manfrotto brand.

Tripod: Manfrotto PIXI Mini

I take this versatile, lightweight and portable Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod everywhere on my travels. Thanks to the universal ¼ inch screw thread and excellent stability, you can use this mini tripod with many digital devices weighing up to 1 kg.

We use the Manfrotto Smartphone Holder Clamp screw thread attachment, as it easily supports the weight of our Samsung phones or other Compact System Cameras (CSC).

The tripod's comfortable handgrip makes it easy to capture great videos and selfies, and its push-button locking mechanism makes it simple to set up on a steady surface. Many a dinner table had us extending open the tripod with my Samsung phone attached, ready to take photos or video footage hands-free.

Tripod: Joby SLR Zoom Gorillapod

This versatile Joby SLR Zoom Gorillapod tripod's tentacles can stand-up anywhere and twist around tree branches, railings, poles, and much more.

It works great with our GoPro and DSLR and Mirrorless cameras, allowing you to attach your camera to literally anything.

It's also one of our favourite small and lightweight travel accessories when vlogging for the creative ways you can hold, angle and splay it when taking video footage.

Check out this video for 5 Creative GorillaPod Hacks.

Our Drones

Best Drones For Aerial Travel Photography

Drones are the most recent addition to our travel photography gear and we love them. Where possible, a drone comes with us on our travels giving us a completely new aerial aspect to our photography and videography.

JOHN'S TRAVEL TIP
Please ensure you check and abide by local laws when flying drones. Drone laws are constantly changing, so it’s your responsibility to make sure you know and follow them. We can think of nothing worse to have your drone confiscated at customs, before you enter a country.

This palm-sided DJI Mini 3 Pro drone has been a game-changer allowing us up to 34-min maximum flight time, true vertical shooting and fantastic 4K/60fps & 4K/30fps HDR video recording quality and capabilities.

Ultralight (weighs less than 249g) folding drone with all the professional features, meets the regulatory requirements of most countries and regions, so no registration is required.

It includes the new DJI Remote Control (RC), which has the DJI Fly App pre-installed and a built-in 5.5-inch HD display for crisp viewing even in direct sunlight. Whether you’re looking for everyday recording or travel shooting, its compact size makes it easy to pull out of your backpack for when aerial creativity strikes. I can also quickly switch to portrait mode – ideal for my social-media focused content.

Optional extras not included are the power-brick Mini 3 Pro 30W USB-C Charger and the travel case, the DJI Mini 3 Pro Fly More Kit Plus. Both are mentioned further below under Camera Accessories.

Our Insta360 One X2 is a great way to capture drone-like video footage without letting go, controlling a flight path and doesn’t challenge aviation regulations.

Whilst the Insta360 isn’t a drone, per se, the camera does give a similar perspective, is smaller than an ultralight drone, has a touchscreen and is waterproof.

We love our Insta360 One X2 is great for vlogging and general filming without showing our selfie-arms in the finished product.

You can really get creative when best paired with Insta360’s simple invisible selfie stick (see the Camera Accessories section for more details), giving the impression of flying and a floating camera look.

Visit the Insta360 store on Amazon for their full range of products.

Our Camera Accessories

Essential Camera Accessories For Travel

The best camera accessories allow you to push your photography, videography, and creativity to a new extraordinary level. Even further than just the camera or the lens. Filters, memory cards, laptops, software – but don’t worry, we didn’t buy all these gadgets all at once, nor should you!

Choosing the right travel camera accessories requires a balance between performance and portability. Here are our best camera and video accessories, essential photography and videography gadgets and add-ons.

Our Insta360 Invisible Selfie Stick is one of the most valued tools in our photography travel kit. Whilst it is not technically invisible, per se, when paired with an Insta360 camera, the AI technology within automatically hides the stick in your hand.

As a couple or solo traveller, it beats asking a stranger for photo assistance. The stick enables us to capture both of us in a shot with a beautiful landscape in the background. We extend the selfie stick out, get the angle and perspective we want, and take the picture with blue-tooth controls. Voila, it’s that simple!

Our Insta360 Invisible Selfie Stick gives the impression of a flying and floating camera look. From winter or water sports to attaching to cars and bikes for high-speed third-person shots to filming on hikes and country walks – it’s that versatile. See Our Best Cameras For Travel for more details.

To ensure you get the technical support and full features of a selfie stick, you will want to combine it with one of the best selfie cameras, phone, GoPro or 360 cameras on the market.

The best selfie sticks will come with Bluetooth control, extend to a decent length and pack away small enough to fit in a backpack. Some even come with tripod feet.

Visit the Insta360 store on Amazon for their full range of products.

SanDisk Extreme PRO 128GB Memory Card is ideal for our Android smartphone, action cameras and drone, built to last up to 140K hours of recording, sequential burst mode photography and fast speed transfer of images.

The card is compatible with desktop and portable devices with a MicroSD slot, such as our laptops, Samsung smartphone, tablets, Canon cameras and more as listed on this page.

The memory card, by design, is ultra-durable and resistant to extreme temperatures, shocks, water and x-rays. Great for travel and the outdoors!

In terms of budget, you will also find the SanDisk Extreme more affordable than SanDisk Extreme Pro. Check out SanDisk’s range of SD cards in different GB capacities for your camera.

Our Camera Bags

Best Camera Bags For Travel

We have gone through a number of travel bags and backpacks trying to find a carry-all that safely and securely stores our camera gear, accessories and personal items (like passports, credit cards and foreign cash and other travel paraphernalia).

We have finally settled on the camera bags listed below, all of which continue to serve us well on our travels, particularly for their durability, material quality and anti-theft design.

Camera Bag: Lowepro Backpack

John takes this the durable LowePro Backpack on flights as his carry-on luggage for security reasons.

All our cameras, camera lenses and accessories are departmentalised using their adjustable velcro dividers. There is even a special location which can store a large 15″ laptop.

A tripod and a water bottle can be carried on the outside. There are also quick-attach multipurpose straps which we use to hang travel pillows and hats.

Refer to other camera backpacks and organisers in the LowePro range.

Camera Bag: Pacsafe Anti-theft Shoulder Bag

When we aren’t trekking around the countryside with a backpack, this is John’s go-to shoulder bag during the day.

The Pacsafe Metrosafe Anti Theft Shoulder Bag has numerous lockable and zipped compartments for his mobile phone, passport, foreign cash, credit cards. Its anti-theft design with lockable zippers and cut proof materials (lightweight steel mesh) has prevented theft/pickpocketing, plus an RFID blocking pocket has kept his credit cards and IDs safe. The side pockets can fit a travel umbrella and small water bottle. The central compartment can hold two camera lenses and a 11″ notebook.

Refer to other anti-theft travel products in the Pacsafe range.

Backpack: Opsprey Stratos 50 Backpacking Backpack

We initially decided to buy two new backpacks for our trip to New Zealand as we planned to go on long hikes and day trips, e.g., our 8hr return hike to Roy’s Peak on the South Island. One men’s and one unisex  (smaller sized suitable for a woman) backpacks.

John has served 20+ years in the army and knows a thing or two about backpacks. In this regard, he is pretty fussy when purchasing one and making the best choice for our investment.

The Osprey Stratos 50 (at 3lbs/1.36kg) is a superb 50L backpack and ticks all our boxes — from usability to storage pockets and compartments to capacity organisation to overall quality to its ventilation keeping our back sweat-free to its efficient suspension system for even weight distribution keeping our lower-back pain-free.

While the Osprey Stratos range is designed specifically for 3-4 day hiking trips, we also use them for travelling and backpacking.

Check out their other backpacks and travel gear in the Osprey range for men and women.

Camera Bag: Lo & Sons Crossbody Bag

I use this women’s day bag, depending on the type of trip, for carrying my camera and a small extra lens, during the day.

Probably the stylish camera bag you will ever see that doesn’t scream “steal me”. The Claremont crossbody leather bag from Lo & Sons will keep your camera and accessories safe and sound.

The strap length is adjustable, and there are several discreet pockets for essentials — a back zipper pockets for cash/keys/cards, two front pockets for memory cards, and a hanging SD memory card holder.

Refer to other functional and stylish bags for men and women in the Lo & Sons range.

Camera Bag: ONA Backpack

I never leave home on my travels without this compact camera backpack—it’s durable and strong being able to hold my DSLR camera, lenses, drone, my 15″ laptop, and personal items.

Its beautifully handcrafted with premium waxed canvas and leather. With waxed canvas, high-quality leather, the ONA Backpack has a compartment for laptops up to 17 inches, space for up to seven lenses, and room for a camera.

Refer to other fine bags and accessories in the ONA range.
