Venice is a floating dream—a city built on storybook canals, crumbling palazzos, and centuries of artistry that seduces every type of traveller. It’s romantic, mysterious, and impossibly photogenic, where every bridge leads to something beautiful and unexpected.
Imagine gliding along the Grand Canal beneath sunset-streaked skies, a gondolier’s song echoing through the dusk. Picture yourself sipping an Aperol Spritz in St Mark’s Square while duelling orchestras battle for your attention. Stroll through hidden courtyards and lace-filled alleys, then stand in awe beneath Saint Mark’s golden mosaics or inside the dramatic halls of the Doge’s Palace.
And the food? Bellissimo. Every bite is a flavour celebration and tradition, from cicchetti bar crawls to fresh catch at the Rialto Fish Market. You’ll wander where powdered wigs once swayed to Vivaldi, and lose yourself in Carnevale’s masquerade magic.
Whether you’re chasing art, history, romance, or unexpected delights, Venice delivers, all with a side of elegance and a sprinkle of whimsy.
Here’s our curated bucket list of 22 unforgettable experiences, handpicked from our Venetian adventures. Consider it your shortcut to the soul of this spectacular city.

Three Days in Venice: Our Whirlwind Chapter in the Floating City

Venice was one of the most unforgettable stops on our six-week Italy road trip—a kaleidoscope of canal adventures, golden mosaics, and twilight serenades. After driving from Florence via Bologna, we arrived in Venice for three nights, blending iconic sights with intimate moments.
We commenced with a St Mark’s Square to Rialto loop walk and a Jewish Ghetto food and wine tour that set the tone: rich history, warm hospitality, and layers of culture you could taste.
Day two was about exploring by water and foot—cruising the Grand Canal, gliding through quieter canals on a gondola, and diving into the grandeur of St Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace. As evening fell, we soaked in orchestral music beneath the stars in St Mark’s Square.
Our final day transported us across the lagoon by vaporetto, discovering four island gems—San Michele’s quiet beauty, Murano’s fiery glassmaking studios, Burano’s lacework and candy-coloured homes, and Torcello’s ancient ruins. We wrapped up our Venice chapter like local Venetians: with cicchetti bites and spritzes on a self-guided bar crawl. Then it was off to the Dolomites, with Venice lingering like a love song in our rearview.
Below is our curated bucket list of 22 must-try Venetian experiences—filled with culture, charm, and delicious detours.

1Wander St Mark’s Square from Every Compass Point
Must-Do: Piazza San Marco—Venice’s Living Room of Legends
St Mark’s Square isn’t just a postcard-perfect plaza—it’s the beating heart of Venice. From sunrise to moonlight, each corner offers a different vibe. Start your morning with espresso and pigeons on the western edge, then wander toward the basilica’s golden mosaics in the east. The southern side opens to the lagoon, where gondolas bob like sleepy swans, while the northern arc is lined with cafés and orchestras that duel for your attention come nightfall.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
Exploring Piazza San Marco from every angle lets you soak in Venice’s layered charm, from its architectural grandeur to its theatrical street life. It’s a living museum, a stage, and a lounge all rolled into one.
2Marvel at Saint Mark’s Basilica: A Mosaic Masterpiece
Must-See: Step Inside Venice’s Glittering Spiritual Jewel
Saint Mark’s Basilica is a kaleidoscope of Byzantine brilliance. Its shimmering gold mosaics, marble columns, and domed ceilings tell centuries of stories, some sacred and scandalous. Don’t miss the Pala d’Oro, a golden altarpiece encrusted with jewels, or the rooftop terrace for sweeping views of the square below.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
This isn’t just a church—it’s a sensory overload of art, history, and devotion. Whether you’re a spiritual seeker or a design junkie, the basilica will leave you breathless (and possibly neck-cramped from all the ceiling gawking).
3Unlock the Secrets of the Doge’s Palace
Must-Do: Walk the Corridors of Power and Intrigue
Once the seat of Venetian power, the Doge’s Palace is a labyrinth of opulence and authority. Wander through grand chambers, peek into the Doge’s private apartments, and cross the infamous Bridge of Sighs into the prison cells below. The artwork? Jaw-dropping. The history? Deliciously dramatic.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
It’s like stepping into a Renaissance soap opera, with political plots, lavish décor, and a dash of dungeon gloom. You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for Venice’s complex past and a few goosebumps.
4Cross the Rialto Bridge and Join the Buzz
Must-See: Venice’s Oldest and Most Instagrammed Crossing
The Rialto Bridge is more than a pretty stone arch—it’s the original social hub of Venice. Wander its steps for killer Grand Canal views, then dive into the nearby market district where locals haggle over produce like it’s an Olympic sport. It’s busy, bold, and has stories carved into every balustrade.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
Rialto lets you time-travel through Venice’s mercantile roots, offering prime people-watching and photo opportunities. It’s chaos in the best way.
5Wander the Correr Museum’s Time Capsule of Venetian Life
Must-Do: Discover What Made Venice Tick Behind the Glamour
The Correr Museum is your backstage pass to the real Venice, from maps and manuscripts to quirky portraits and political relics. You’ll see how Venetians lived, governed, and gossiped across centuries, plus some serious shoe envy from the 18th-century displays.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
It’s a deep dive into the Venetian soul—not just the glitter, but the grit. Perfect for travellers who want to go beyond the façade.
6Get Cultured at the Accademia’s Gallery of Greats
Must-See: Venetian Art That’ll Leave You Starstruck
The Gallerie dell’Accademia is bursting with Venetian masterpieces. Think Titian, Veronese, Bellini—plus a mysterious Vitruvian Man sketch tucked away like a treasure. The storytelling through brushstroke here is bold, dramatic, and deeply human.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
This isn’t just a gallery—it’s a visual diary of Venice’s glory days. If you love art that feels personal and powerful, this is your jam.
7Get Eclectic at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection
Must-Do: Let Surrealism and Modernism Mingle on the Grand Canal
Peggy Guggenheim was a collector with serious flair. Her former home is now a museum filled with works by Picasso, Dalí, and Pollock. It’s intimate, unexpected, and weirdly wonderful—just like Venice.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
Art lovers, rejoice: this spot fuses avant-garde creativity with Venetian elegance. Plus, Peggy’s backstory is a vibe.
8Visit Frari Church for Soulful Grandeur
Must-See: A Spiritual Hideaway Packed with Artistic Heavyweights
Don’t let its plain brick exterior fool you—the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari is a powerhouse of sacred art. Inside, you’ll find Titian’s glorious altarpiece and his tomb, surrounded by silence and sunbeams. It’s humble and haunting all at once.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
It’s where Venice whispers, not shouts. Ideal for travellers seeking quiet awe and a moment of reflection.
9Pause at the Bridge of Sighs (Then Peek Behind the Myth)
Must-Do: Cross from Royalty to Reprimand in One Step
This baroque bridge connects the Doge’s Palace to the prison—and those “sighs”? They weren’t romantic, they were prisoners lamenting lost freedom. Snap your photo from outside, then step inside to feel the gravity of history.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
It’s one of Venice’s most famous landmarks, but the real story adds depth—and a little darkness—to your sightseeing.
10Cruise the Grand Canal for a Floating Front-Row Seat
Must-Do: Let Venice’s Waterway Steal the Show
Hop on a vaporetto or splurge on a private boat to glide past palazzos, churches, and crumbling beauty. Venice’s main transport artery is the Grand Canal, and every curve delivers cinematic drama.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
It’s the ultimate Venetian experience—equal parts glam, grit, and gondolier gossip.
11Hunt for Murano Glass with an Eye for Flair
Must-Do: Watch Fire Become Art, Then Take a Piece Home
Murano glassmakers have been crafting magic for centuries. Take a ferry to the island, watch a live-blowing demo, and shop for delicate sculptures or vibrant jewellery. It’s tradition with a twist.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
These artisans embody Venice’s artistic spirit. Bonus: your suitcase will sparkle.
12Admire Burano’s Lacemaking Ladies (and Rainbow Charm)
Must-See: Colour, Craft, and Conversations with the Queens of Thread
Burano is like Venice’s quirky cousin—all pastel houses and personality. Pop into lace shops to see women hand-stitching heirlooms and soak in stories passed down through generations.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
It’s intimate, Instagrammable, filled with heart at a slower pace, a splash of colour, and serious craftsmanship.
13Climb the Clock Tower for a Rooftop Riviera
Must-Do: Get High on History (and Views!) Above St Mark’s Square
The Torre dell’Orologio is a Renaissance marvel topped with two bronze giants who ring in the hours. Climb the terrace for one of Venice’s best panoramas—without the Campanile crowds.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
Venice from above is a whole new mood. Bells, rooftops, and lagoon blues for days.
14Glide Through Venice in a Gondola (Yes, It’s Worth It)
Must-Do: Float Past Palazzos Like a 17th-Century VIP
Sure, it’s touristy. But gliding through Venice’s canals in a gondola is pure magic. Your gondolier might sing, flirt, or share local lore as you pass under bridges and beside crumbling facades. Go at sunset for that golden glow, or at night for moody romance.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
It’s Venice distilled into one dreamy moment—slow, scenic, and steeped in tradition. Bonus: you’ll feel like you’re starring in your unique Italian film.
15Celebrate the Spectacle of Carnevale
Must-Do: Mask Up and Join the Most Fabulous Street Party in Europe
Carnevale (February/March) turns Venice into a living masquerade. Think elaborate costumes, mysterious masks, and spontaneous parades through foggy alleys. Whether you attend a grand ball or wander the streets, you’ll feel swept into another century.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
It’s theatrical, whimsical, and wildly photogenic. Carnevale is Venice at its most playful and poetic.
16Attend a Baroque Vivaldi Concert in Full Wigged Glory
Must-Do: Let the Music of Venice’s Favourite Son Sweep You Away
Step into a candlelit church or historic hall and hear Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by musicians in powdered wigs and brocade. It’s dramatic, intimate, and surprisingly emotional.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
It’s not just a concert—it’s time travel. You’ll leave humming, swooning, and maybe Googling harpsichords.
17Taste Tradition On A Jewish Ghetto Food Tour
Must-Eat: Discover Venice’s Oldest Neighbourhood Through Its Flavours
The Jewish Ghetto of Venice offers a powerful blend of heritage, heart, and flavour. On a guided food tour, you’ll sample traditional non-kosher Venetian dishes and trace the footsteps of centuries of resilience. Stroll through the storied streets and squares of the Old Ghetto (Ghetto Vecchio), pause outside the Rabbi’s house, and wander through quiet courtyards and historic synagogues that echo with history.
As twilight settles, Venice unveils its nightly magic—churches bathed in golden light, canals shimmering like melted stars, and alleyways sparkling with charm. With a glass of prosecco, you’ll see the city anew: vibrant, reflective, and irresistibly poetic.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Foodie Experience
It’s a meaningful and mouthwatering way to connect with Venice’s rich and layered identity. Come hungry—and curious.
18Do a Cicchetti Crawl Like a Local
Must-Do: Hop Between Bacari for Venice’s Tapas-Style Treats
Cicchetti are bite-sized delights—think crostini with baccalà, fried zucchini flowers, and anchovy-topped polenta. Pair them with a glass of wine or spritz and bounce from bar to bar in Cannaregio or Dorsoduro like a true Venetian.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Foodie Experience
It’s casual, communal, and delicious. You’ll eat well, meet locals, and maybe discover your new favourite snack.
19Toast to Romance with Duelling Café Orchestras in St Mark’s Square
Must-Do: Sip Something Sparkly While the Music Plays On
At night, St Mark’s Square transforms into a stage. Competing café orchestras serenade diners with classics while the basilica glows in the background. Grab a table, order a drink, and let the ambience do the rest.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Evening Experience
It’s pure Venetian romance—elegant, theatrical, and unforgettable. Even the pigeons seem to waltz.
20Rise Early for the Rialto Fish Market’s Morning Mayhem
Must-Do: Watch Venice Wake Up Over Ice and Anchovies
The Rialto Fish Market is a riot of colour, chatter, and crushed ice. Arrive early to see locals haggle over swordfish, soft-shell crabs, and Sicilian prawns. It’s raw, real, and refreshingly unpolished.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Morning Experience
It’s Venice without the varnish—just fishermen, foodies, and the salty scent of the Adriatic. Bring your camera and your curiosity.
21Sip an Aperol Spritz with a Side of Piazza People-Watching
Must-Drink: Raise a Glass to Venice’s Favourite Sunset Tonic
You haven’t arrived in Venice until you’ve claimed a café chair, ordered a bright-orange Aperol Spritz, and watched the world blur by in perfect slow motion. The fizzy combo of Aperol, prosecco, and soda water over ice is as refreshing as the lagoon breeze—and when paired with olives or chips, it’s the Venetian answer to pre-dinner bliss. Bonus points if your spritz session includes duelling café orchestras or a spontaneous serenade from a gondolier.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
The Aperol Spritz isn’t just a drink—it’s a lifestyle. It invites you to linger, observe, and breathe in the rhythm of Venetian afternoons. And let’s be honest… it makes every Instagram story pop.
22BONUS: Get Lost in Venice’s Secret Courtyards and Quiet Canals
Must-Do: Wander Without a Map and Let the City Surprise You
Venice rewards the aimless. Turn down a random alley, cross a tiny bridge, and you might find a hidden garden, a forgotten shrine, or a cat sunbathing on a marble step.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Experience
It’s the unscripted moments that stay with you. Venice is a maze, and getting lost is half the fun.
